Week 2 Correction: Falcons Line Flips, Entry C Joins Entry A on the Buccaneers

Go Back

A quick correction to yesterday’s Week 2 numbers. Our Splash Sports survivor picks for Entries A and C are both locking onto the same team this week — here’s why.

What Changed

  • The Atlanta Falcons’ Week 2 line flipped overnight: after Cooper Rush’s rough Week 1 start (12-of-22, 143 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT in a 20-13 loss to Pittsburgh), the market moved from Falcons -1.5 to Carolina -1.5, making Atlanta a ~43-46% underdog instead of the ~52% favorite we had yesterday.
  • Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is now considered week-to-week and likely to miss multiple games, not just this one, and backup Michael Penix Jr. (knee) also looks unlikely to be ready for Sunday — Rush is the base-case starter again.
  • Entry C’s Week 2 pick moves from the Falcons to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, matching Entry A’s pick.

Why the Same Team on Both Entries

With Entry B eliminated in Week 1, we revisited a rule we’d been imposing on ourselves all season: never let two of our own entries use the same team in the same week. That rule was our own risk-management choice, not a contest requirement — Splash Sports only restricts team reuse within a single entry, for the life of the contest. Decorrelating entries has a real cost: it forces an entry into a worse team whenever the best option is already “taken” by another entry that week, and that’s exactly what was happening to Entry C this week.

We checked every other team in Entry C’s bank that wasn’t already committed to a specific week elsewhere in the season plan — the Cardinals (underdogs to Seattle), the Jets (underdogs to Green Bay), the Dolphins (big underdogs to the 49ers), the Browns (underdogs to Tampa Bay itself), and the Raiders (underdogs to the Chargers) — and none of them beat Atlanta’s number on their own. But Entry A’s Week 2 team, the Buccaneers, is sitting at 76%. The math on doubling up: expected entries surviving Week 2 with Entry C staying on the Falcons is roughly 0.76 + 0.44 ≈ 1.20; with both entries on the Buccaneers it’s 2 × 0.76 = 1.52. Using the stronger team for both entries is a straightforward expected-value improvement — the tradeoff is variance, not expected outcome: if the Buccaneers lose, both entries go down together instead of the risk being spread across two different games. With the gap this large (a likely-loss versus a likely-win), that tradeoff clears the bar easily.

This isn’t a blanket policy change to always double up going forward — we’ll keep evaluating it week to week, matching entries when the edge clearly justifies the added correlation risk and keeping them split when the options are close enough that diversification is worth more than a small edge.

The Buccaneers pick displaces itself from Entry C’s original Week 15 slot, where it had been paired with the Rams in a double-pick week. Week 15 is more than three months out with no real market pricing available yet, so rather than invent a number, we’ve slotted the Falcons into that spot as a placeholder at roughly today’s number — flagged for a full re-check once Week 15 actually comes into pricing range, the same treatment every other far-future week in this plan gets.

What’s Next

We’ll keep watching the Falcons QB situation in case Tua or Penix is a surprise return — that would be the trigger to revisit this decision before kickoff. Otherwise, next update comes with fresh Week 2 line checks and any Week 3 news as the week progresses.
