It was a joke before this week – dating way back to when Calipari left Memphis (frankly, before that) its been a joke. College basketball recruitment is a dirty, nasty business which is a joke.

Now both Xavier Henry and his older brother CJ Henry are indicating they may not be headed to Kansas afterall. And the KU Jayhawks might be better off without him. After comments by their father that clearly indicated they have no interest in attending classes or being in college started a firestorm on Monday of this week its gotten worse. Now stories are out that Bill Self is flying to meet with the Henry family right away – hopefully to resolve this once and for all.

When Henry indicated (and there is no letter of intent at this stage – you only get one such letter and his was with Memphis, which he’s been released from) he was coming to Kansas to be a Jayhawk KU became the overwhelming favorite for the national title in 2010. If they don’t come – that changes.

But at this point, none of that matters. What this brings up is simply this – what the hell is wrong with college basketball, college basketball recruiting, families and kids being made huge stars for being high school athletes. This display by the Henry brothers – back and forth, changing their minds again, sucking up all the media that goes with it, etc, etc… is all a joke. It’s pathetic. It isn’t changing anytime soon but it’s a disgrace.

Just 3 days ago one of the greatest sporting events of the year came to an end with the North Carolina Tar Heels winning it all.
March Madness starts with the greatest 4 days in sports – rounds 1 and 2 of the tournament are like a holiday, only better – fewer relatives and it lasts 4 days! So many games, so little time!

Sports is the ultimate reality TV – no script can ever match what sports delivers.

The detractors of the tournament – mostly talking heads on TV that talk to hear themselves talk like to worry about the 66th team (don’t even get me started on the stupidity of the 65th team) or the 67th team. Mainly these are guys from big schools that think more big conference big schools should be in the tournament instead of the St Mary’s and San Diego State’s of the world. I get that small schools don’t play the tough schedules because of their conferences providing little to no competition and political BS of big schools not playing “mid-majors” but when go 27-3 you deserve a shot. That’s what the tournament is all about. The odds of that team – the “last in” winning the title is exceptionally slim…just like the chances if that last team in is the 7th or 8th best team in a so called “power conference” that plays an unbalanced schedule anyway. Let the “little guy” in and give them their shot. It’s what makes the tournament great.
