He will officially be the #1 draft pick on Saturday around 4pm ET but Matthew Stafford has already signed for $41.7 guaranteed! The contract could be worth up to $78 million! As usual, staggering numbers for players who have never thrown a pass in the NFL. He can thank, in part, the 2008 draft class of QBs as we saw a lot more wins last season from rookie QBs – including two playoff appearances. And those guys were not nearly as highly rated as Stafford.
He’s now set for life financially (at least he should be with any minimal money management skill) and his family is set for life. That’s the good news. The bad news is – he now plays for the Detroit Lions. His offensive line won’t be as good as it was last year in college. But Stafford has a chance to be successful if he stays upright and is committed to succeeding – and sometimes that’s not easy with that much money in the bank already.
